We are told by an unknown narrator in the story that Sara’s father has been married many times, and in each instance, his wives die before producing offspring. Though Sara’s mother is different, she is similar in the sense that she does die, though not after having had given birth to Sara. What is the significance of this information?
The Golden Cow is an interesting symbol in this story. Why a cow? What are some possible meanings here?
Remember that a symbol is something in the story that has meaning(s) beyond the literal. For example, in this case, is the cow just a cow, nothing more? Is the cow simply a convenient receptacle for hiding young, beautiful girls that wish to escape a dysfunctional home life? Or is there something more here?
