Attached are 4 sketches of paintings that I'm either working on or about to start for "Hassan and the Jewels." I wanted each drawing to mimic parts of the journey - things that Hassan may have seen if he were traveling in a modern city, but views of common things like stones, broken glass and sidewalk marks and shoe prints that people are generally familiar with. I wanted to also orient the paintings so that they could be viewed from any angle and I thought it might also be interesting if the text from the stories might wrap around the pictures to also form a sort of physical journey for the reader through the motion of turning. To achieve more continuity, I'm painting the images on surfaces that relate to each other as well with a similar palette. For example, I'm going to paint the glass shatter/mosaic with a background of concrete like it was found in the street to have more continuity with the other painting that I'm doing of the footprints and stones on the sidewalk.
